This Country Has Lost Its Love

When I was growing up we were taught that America is a great nation that has opened its arms to the world. We intervened in two world wars and helped to bring about an age of stability. I wish I could say we live in an age of peace but this isn’t like fantasy books. Our world has become a darker, angrier place. What confuses me is why so many Americans fill their lives with hate and anger. The people of Central America who want to come here are not our enemies. They only want better lives and they cannot find those better lives elsewhere. Why must we be so selfish with our borders?

A Christian should feel only love toward their fellow man. Churches today preach hatred, intolerance, bigotry. Where did that poison come from? That isn’t the message I read in the Bible.

Donald Trump promised to make America great again. All he has done is drag us down into the mud. He speaks new lies every day. He is like the False Prophet of the Bible, speaking only blasphemies. Christians should stand up and say they want no part of this man’s presidency.

When the world is in pain America should be there to comfort them.

When children go hungry in distant cities America should be ready to feed them. We have the wealth and the technology to do this. It doesn’t cost us much to share our good fortune. Most of the national budget is spent on defense and social programs. We reap the majority of our tax benefits through those programs. Why can’t we be more generous?

What happened to the America my grandfathers and great-grandfathers fought for? What happened to the nation that saved a world from the brink of slavery to fascism and communism?

Some day we will look back upon Donald Trump’s presidency with shame and regret. We will remember these years as the Darkening of America.

I hope, truly hope, we haven’t yet lost that spark of love God gave us. I hope we find our way out of this darkness together and become whole again. There is so much good left to do.
